"I'm going home and taking everything that has Goodyears off and put Firestones on and feel a lot safer," Stewart said. "It's a shame these teams that work so hard are being dictated by a company incapable of building tires fit for a street car."

That's a pretty stark contrast to the Firestone/Ford Explorer incidents a few years ago.

I'll take Goodyears over 'Stones. The AV is currently on Triple-treads.
Yes, it all stems from the Explorer issue.

What most people don't get is that tires that come on a car from the factory are spec'd out by the auto manufacturer. In the case of the Explorer / Wilderness problem, Ford had the Firestone tires designed for the SUV's use, then went ahead and told people to underinflate the tires for a better ride (but not necessarily safer). The blame should really have been placed on Ford. Remember that there were, and still are, Wilderness tires coming on GM vehicles with no problems.
I've had my share of tires, and have not been in love with any Goodyears that I've had except the Eagle GTII's I had on my Vette, more because they looked great as opposed to how they performed.
