The block (mounting holes) changed. Flexplate and starter have worked together before. I ordered the starter today, (SUM-820323) even though I may try my original one again, first.

Chree: glad to see you made it over here. I have a feeling that before I'm done, I'm going to end up using the 8-pin HEI, triggering the MSD via the white wire from the HEI's Coil-Negative terminal.

I got the new starter in last night. The engine now cranks over easily and it fired up easily too. It was after 11pm last night and with no throttle cable to the carb, I didn't run it very long -- maybe 2-3 minutes.
