Door Hinge Spring Installation

Post by Maverick »

I got involved yesterday in changing the door hinge pins in a 200X Chevy pickup. We got the job done EXCEPT for reinstalling the hinge springs that hold the door open.

The springs are very stiff and somewhat smaller than a common auto valve spring but I think an old timey valve spring compressor with double forks that insert into the spring from the side might do the trick. After looking at HUNDREDS of online spring compressors I haven't found any except for small engine tools like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Valve-Spring-Co ... db&vxp=mtr That tool might fit these springs but I'm not sure it would be strong enough for the Chevy hinge springs. Anyone know where to get a tool like that for automotive valve springs?

BTW, I was surprised to see the hinges WELDED to the door and body with no possibility for adjustment. Didn't know the modern body construction was that precise.
