If they are worried about lower tax revenue due to more fuel efficient vehicles, then maybe those high MPG vehicles should the ones getting extra taxes.

If more revenue is needed just raise the licensing fee on vehicles that way the government won't need to create a bloated inefficient program to collect the money. Use something that already exists.

There's too many ways to cheat this "proposed" system.

Government money pays for libraries but we don't charge people on the number of books they take out, why would we do the same with cars?

Just put a road tax on plug-in and other alternative fuel vehicles and set the road tax where it needs to be to cover highway construction and maintenance.

BTW, Progressive Insurance "offers" a black box that records where, when, and how fast you drive.

Old news. Obama already has a draft of the proposal, May 2011. Don't believe it when they say that it hasn't been circulated. You can't trust gubment.

I heard about this. If your car is OBD2 it plugs in to that port. Wonder what would happen if I had it in the car making laps at Nelson?

I hate the Flo character and all the commercials, and this is just another reason to stay away from Progressive IMO.

Just to be clear, you get the Progressive black box only if you sign up for that program with reduced rates. LIke their "price comparison", it's another way of skimming off the low risk customers and sending the high risk customers to another insurance company.

That woman is a little wierd.

Test program to see if the concept works. They can review the data and if it looks beneficial it will then be placed in effect full scale. Or maybe I'm just wearing my tin foil hat a bit too much.

We could all just put REALLY tall tires on our cars so the car says we're going 25% slower than we really are...

Think they use the GPS data to know your speed. With the black box they know what roads you drive and when. If you're drive high-accident roads at high accident times you're a bigger risk and they'll charge you more. At least that was the theory 10-15 years ago.

I think all the black box does is monitor your OBDII system to check your speeds, acceleration %, etc. I don't think they're using GPS yet. Maybe I'm wrong?

Think you're right. Guess they didn't implement the things they were thinking about several years ago. They say their "Snapshot" isn't concerned with where or how fast you drive. http://www.progressive.com/auto/snapsho ... works.aspx

Progressive had a test several years ago with a device that tracked where and when you drove. Theory was that drivers who use high risk routes at high risk times would pay more (or go to another insurance company). Wonder why they gave up on that?
