A first for me

While in Florida, Randi and I stayed at a Holiday Inn at Boynton Beach.
One day while coming back to the hotel from an outing, I spotted something along the side of the road entering the hotel property. It looked, at first glance like a motor, but I knew I must be mistaken. But my first impression was so strong, I pulled into the parking lot and walked over. Here's what I saw:



So, how do you lose a motor? I saw no scars or marks on the pavement indicating it fell off a truck. It must have been left there purposely. But why in this busy, rather upscale neighborhood?
Can anyone identify it?
