Hey guys,
Does anyone have experience with commercial octane boosters? I have been driving my Vette for about a week and The pinging is becoming noticeable. Granted I didn't pay much attention to the octane rating on the pump at the Valero station when i gassed up. But whatever valero hi test is, it isn't enough for an 11.5 motor. Years ago I ran Sunoo 240 or 260 and that woeked. But that was before unleaded gas and gasohol. I know Hess hi test is supposed to be pretty good. But if any one has used a commercial booster I would gladly love to hear if iy works.

With all due respect, why not just buy a can, follow the directions and see what it does? It seems that you have a great test situation.

Isn't there an octane boost called 104? The few times I have added octane boost I used that and there were no bad effects. I generally do not have high compression engines so have only experimented with it a few times.
Of course you could get some aluminum heads. They would flow better and you can get away with a half point more compression before you need octane boost. The improved flow could more than offset the reduced compression. Get some that set you up around 10:1 and you'll be able to run on premium.

The black bottle 104 Octane works pretty well. I used to have to run it in my Caddy when it had the 10.5 motor in it and it was a big difference when it was in compared to when it was out. I'd also check the timing to make sure it's not pushed up too high. You could also fatten up the secondaries to help combat the ping.

Well here is the latest report on the dreaded detonation. It actually was getting worse as I drove the car more. I filled the tank with Mobil hi-test and bought Lucas octane boost. Interestingly, the bottle says to use one bottle per fillup, then it says "Not Street Legal". That sealed the deal for me! I had to use it if wasn't legal
Anyway, it was still pinging. My friend Pat Hennebery was over a couple of nights ago so we figured lets get after the timing. The only specs I had were from the service manual. It called for 4 degrees BTDC at idle, no vacuum advance. I couldn't find a total advance number. I'm sure if I look hard enough I can find it. We had a difficult time getting a good reading at idle with no vacuum advance, but total advance seemed to be up around 44 to 46. We backed that down to around 34 to 36 total. The idle timing, no vacuum, then seemd to be within 2 to 4 BTDC. Tookm it for a test ride, no noticeable pinging. It was probably the timing the whole time. But I'll have to watch it as time goes by. I was getting reluctant to drive too much with the pinging. But now its back on the road.
