Best Upgrade for your Garage this year??

Post by Racin'Jacin »

I asked this on another forum and got lots of ideas for additional improvements so I figured maybe we could do the same thing here?

So what was YOUR best upgrade to your garage/shop/work area this year???

For me it was the Keyless entry I added to the garage. I don't trust remotes (too many guys at work can easily defeat them) and so I wanted something nearly as easy to use but more secure.

Enter Basement Paul & HGR who fixed me up with a handful of Electric Door strikes and then Ebay for a keypad add a 24v supply and some other misc odds and ends and bingo bango I'm in like flynn!!

I absolutely love not having to remember my keys - I also mounted it where you can reach it from the car - added benefit!!!

So what was YOURS???

Probably not what you're looking for, but getting my Chevelle drivable again was my best upgrade -- meaning, I can easily pull it out of the garage to work on something else, or moving it more in the middle to give myself extra working room. Doesn't sound like much, but having an undriveable car taking up half the garage is quite a limiting factor.

Aside from that, I got a couple of 8-outlet strips that were going to be discarded from our datacenter, mounted one to the front of my workbench, and another mounted near my cubby hole, giving me plenty of outlets in the places I need them most. Also, I found a cheap timer-switch at Home Depot and mounted it in an electrical box with a 6-ft cord, giving me a timed outlet. It's nice for running my torpedo heater, so it will shut off automatically, from 10-60 minutes. Finally, I still have a motion sensor to install for the garage lights so they'll always turn on when entering the garage, and turn off after no motion. I can't tell you how many times I've left my garage lights on all night.

Best upgrade in the house garage: 2008 Chevy Colorado in the garage. My wife loves this truck and now there is a truck around for hauling things.

Best upgrade in the detached garage: Getting rid of stuff! I watched a few of those hoarding videos and it inspired me to sell or pitch a bunch of crap.

Sorry no cool gadgets or upgrades specifically for the garage.

OK - so for the house portion of this question - I just finished a quickie redo of the kitchen - I drug my feet on this one but it's finally done - pergo floor, paint for walls & cabinets (cabinets actually look pretty good & I don't have to worry about the next time the dogs make a mark on them). So now it's off to the staircase to the basement - decades of draggin' engine blocks, rearends, transmissions, countless heavy tools even a soda fountain have taken a heafty toll on the condition of the stair treads, ,but the final straw was our burst pipe in the kitchen - the water ran down the staircase and has caused each and every glued joint to open. Yes even in 1958 the stair treads were each made up of 3 or 4 pieces glued together - just as they are today. What job replacing those!!!!!! It's about 1/2 done...

There is such a thing as having too many skills.
No grease and working with wood, ugh!
My wife is never going to see this posting.
