I can't really decide, but I guess I'd lean toward machined. Give me your address and you can inspect it much more closely. I have no use for this thing. At worst, the gear should be replaceable.

And, do you know if its for a 289/302/5.0. Should be 5" from the hold down shoulder to the end of the shaft.

It is indeed 5". Parts like this typically cost a dinner at Carlisle, if that seems fair.

Sure hope that's a steel gear. I tried changing one but they're pressed on and its about impossible to get the holes lined up for the roll pin. Recommended procedure is to press it on the right distance and drill a new hole thru the shaft. I'm not equiped for that and it makes no sense to take it to a machine shop. Would be cheaper to buy a rebuilt distributor.

Friend Jim, second owner of the Sprint, came today to help pull out the bench seat and install the carpet and buckets. Started by letting the new carpet soak up the nice November sun to relax the shipping creases.

I'm really pleased with the carpet and the upholstery. So much of what is available today is junk but these things are great quality. Carpet layed down just like it should. I'm amazed that a guy can take some flat pieces of material and make those seat covers.





I still have to put the covers on the rear seat cushions and finish up several details. Looks like the interior will be ready for the Maverick's first car show. The 2010 Carolina Collector Car Show is Saturday at the State Fair Grounds. I'm taking the Sprint and WXO will have his pickup in the corral. Should be fun.

Not having a lot of fun today. Had this post nearly done and it disappeared.

Coming home from the show Saturday night, with traffic from the car show, NCSU Homecoming game, the big flea market, etc, etc, etc, all getting out at the same time. After about an hour in traffic, the Maverick started running really bad again. Wasn't sure I would make it home. Wouldn't idle and big time hesitation under light throttle. OK, back to basics.

Pulled the plugs and found the all uniformly super clean.



Must be very lean, right?

Did a compression check and got 137-155 range for all cylinders. Not perfect (didn't do a valve job) but not the problem. Thank God!!!

Fuel pressure is 7.5# on the starter with 2 surges. That'll do.

I gave up on the Holley and ordered a 600 CFM Summit 4 bbl for $259. Electric choke, vacuum secondaries, and Ford kickdown. "Flow tested before it's shipped." Should be a bolt on, adjust & go if the throttle linkage fits.

Now, the AC clutch isn't engaging. Looks like its the temp-sensing switch on the evaporator went bad. Great!! I tested it before installing the heater/AC unit. That means the AC system has to be opened up and the heater/AC unit under the dash has to come out. The unit I hoped NEVER to have to take out again.

Wonder if I'll be redoing things forever.

On a happier note, bro Willy is flying to Raleigh and driving down to Florida with me for the Jan 8/9 NPD All Ford show in Silver Springs. I'm really pleased about that. Hang onto that thought.

Carb will arrive tomorrow. Hope that's a cure. If not, the Duraspark/HEI ignition HAS to be. And, I'll still be looking for a backup ignition.

Put the new Summit carb on and it started right up with smooth idle. I was surprised how close the adjustments were right out of the box. Floats were a little high but it ran pretty well as is. Took it for a short drive and it has NO stumble now. Its also quieter when I'm cruising the neighborhood since I don't have to use the throttle to prevent stumble. Very pleased.

My next door neighbor is a photographer and he agreed to shoot some pictures of the Sprint. The background is a boat launch on Falls Lake just North of Raleigh.

Also getting new carrier bearings and (longer) ring gear bolts. I'll get a price for a local shop to install it in my center section and then decide if I want to try installing it myself. Probably not if the price is right. So far the answer is "not much".

Finally getting around to installing the Traction-Loc. Pulled the center section and dropped all the stuff off with a guy that's going to set it up. He was recommended by a Maverick forum member that lives just Southwest of Raleigh in Apex. WXO and I went up to Creedmoor, 10 or so miles North of us, to a little old timey Ford dealer where the guy works. There was NO work going on the the 5 or 6 bays. He will press the new carrier bearings on and also install new wheel bearings on the azles. Says it should be done by Friday. Charge will be "$100, maybe $150".

While we were chatting with him, he said there were two Mavericks in a junk yard a few miles from there. We HAD to have a look. Good thing!! Looked like they hadn't been touched yet and one had the complete disk brakes. They're getting hard to find and bringing $200 plus shipping. $100 for the whole setup: spindles, rotors, calipers, master cyl, proportioning valve and lines. Put a deposit to hold it and will go back up there tomorrow to get it. WXO is considering his availability. I'll need his help to reinstall the center section -- can't believe how heavy it is.

Front disk brakes are almost a necessary upgrade for a Mav with added HP. I'm really happy to have some on the way.

Disk brakes AND a posi unit??? This will feel completely different by Spring! It will start and stop way better. NICE!

Junk yard crawling (and scoring!) in winter.. that's awesome. Disc brakes were the best upgrade I ever did to my Chevelle.

WXO and I had a good morning! Disk brakes parts are all secured. We went up to the junk yard this AM and got everything. They lifted the Mav with a fork lift and set it down on stacks of wheels. It all came apart quite easily. Even saved the brake lines. The only REALLY rusty parts are the rotors and calipers. They'll be replaced but its good to have the caliper cores -- they are expensive.

Also got the head light bezels. Its hard to find them dent-free. One of mine is dented. Took the sealed beams too because they're quite expensive now.

Took out the AM/FM radio (mine is AM) but the windshield must have been leaking. The radio case is very rusty. They were going to charge me $20 but when I said I didn't want it they gave it to me. Doubt that its going to work but I'll try it. Borrowed a spare antenna and speaker from WXO so we'll see.

The other Maverick is manual steering. The manual steering box, drag link and tie rods are in demand for guys that want a mostly race car. They'd be nice to have but don't think I'll bother with them.

Tranction-Loc is supposed to be ready tomorrow/Friday. If it is, with WXO help I may get the rear end back together on Saturday.
