Re: F1 FAIL!
I remember reading about this somewhere... The story at the time was that one corner had a failure, and the additional loading on the other corner caused it to fail as well.
Things like that make me laugh when people talk about "FORMULA ONE TECHNOLOGY!". They design everything to be just strong enough to last for one race (two if rules require) so they can move that weight a foot lower into the ballast.
My favorite was the carbon fiber transaxle, because regular metallic cases would distort too much. Why were they distorting? Besides the usual oh-too-light, they would only have a quart of fluid in the thing, so temperature was an issue.
I guess that's why I'm more a fan of stage rally. Lost an entire corner? No whining, just finish the stage and try to make it to service...

Re: F1 FAIL!
I have to somewhat agree and would say that that's one of the reasons F1 is not hugely popular in the US. The cars are sooo damn delicate. Rubbin' is racin', and F1 will have none of that. But by the same token, I've never understood why Rally racing isn't more popular.
Maybe in the US, Rally racing needs a class for those bad-ass SCORE off-road trucks, since people here equate offroad with trucks, not an AWD Focus with a turbo 2-liter.
