Maverick and I took the Z28 to Dunn-Benson Dragstrip for their Test-n-tune night. This is the closest strip to us but it's only 1/8 mile.
The car was very competent, but the driver was way rusty. I got in 6 runs and the best I could muster was about a 14.30 in quarter mile terms. My best 60 ft was a 2.17 on the 245/50/16 street tires and my reaction time really sucked. I forgot how difficult it was to manage the staging, the tree, rpms, and getting out of the hole all at the same time.
Eighth mile is really short. I was at the end of second gear at about 6 grand when I crossed the lights.
Except for a smelly clutch, the car ran well in the hot evening.
I had a great time. I drove the Z most of the way to the track. Fun car!!! Didn't really get into it but it feels really fast but with good highway gears. Nice clutch.
WXO offered to let me take a run at the strip but I declined. Didn't feel comfortable enough with the gearshift and wouldn't want to break something. So, I observed and took pictures. I hadn't been to a strip since about 1960. Today's cars are BEASTS compared to back then.
1/8th mile track seems good for practice. No inspection, no rules. $5 to race all night. WXO treated, but I think the admission price was also $5. LOTS of bikes. Only mis-hap was one biker that lost it and took a spill about 100 feet out. Only his pride was hurt. The bike was scraped up some.

The calculated 14.30 aint to bad. A three pedal car, is not the easiest thing to work at the track.
Ask Mr. Smoker...
Now would be a good time for the Maverick to purchase that stroker kit.
Anyway, the last time I was out to TRP was August 8th.
My best 8th mile was 8.71 at 80.32mph with a 2.01 60'
and a sound aslept .21 reaction.
No wonder Maverick got the holeshot on me.
If I needed new pistons or crank work, I would have considered a stroker kit. Since bore and crank were OK as is, I couldn't see the additional $1000. I still have to buy paint and an all new interior.

If you put a racing seat in there it'll be cheaper than a new interior, and the car will be lighter. you can always buy the interior when you sell the car you win on "pinks all out".

About that calculation to 14.50 on WXO's SS. After talking with GMJohnny and BasementPaul,
we think they really missed the mark. Our opinion is that, if all the gears are engaged correctly,
that Camaro is solidly in the 13's. Can't wait to see it do a burnout and make a full pass.
I got the calculation from some online thing and it was in the neighborhood of 14:35. I'm in total agreement with y'all, though. The car is capable even if the owner isn't. I think a little more tire would help some, along with a whole lot of practice (if the clutch holds out).
Regardless, the car is great fun to drive and I don't miss the Jeep.
