Jeep gas gauge mystery

Post by wxo »

The fuel gauge in the Jeep quit working a few weeks ago and just today I started looking for the problem. I learned that all the gauges in the cluster can be checked by pushing and holding the trip reset button while turning on the ignition. The test showed that all gauges functioned correctly including the gas gauge. So I crawled under to see where the tank sender was located.
I was greeted with this:

I was unable to get a real clear picture, but you are looking at a bundle of chewed up wires and one broken off wire. Wanna bet the broken one is from the fuel sender? Interestingly I don't see any way for this to have occurred. I wonder if squirrels would do something like this. These wires are tucked up near the floorpan close to the gas tank. I didn't have time to pursue it any further today, but I'm sure something will work better when I fix that broken wire.

First, what Jeep? I thought you sold the 4banger\stick XJ? Must be a different Jeep. I'm so behind the times.
Second, if squirrels can provide one with scented exhaust, (ref a certain Camaro), then I see no need to doubt they can find your sending unit.

Mark, it's a 2001 Cherokee Sport I6, 5 spd. I've had it for a couple of years now.
