Just got back from a 640 mile round trip to Carlisle, Ohio, returning through Wheeling WV. I've never reset my average mileage on the DIC since I recieved this car, I raised it from 19.4 to 19.7. I used 27.8 gallons of fuel at 4.29/gal., costing almost $120. If you do the math, that's a wisper over 23mpg. I think that's incredable for a 469hp, 4400 lb. cruiser with the ac and some luggage.
How did I do it? Well, normally I would travel at 7 over the limit, that is, 72 in a 65, sometimes speeding up if traffic flow allowed it. For this trip I slowed down 5 mph, so I was running 67 in a 65, NEVER went over 70. I could tell the difference immediately. It did add some travel time to the whole trip. Going that speed is not that much fun, but I'm not allowed to play when my wife is with me anyway. She loved it.

Whats the EPA ratings on the STS-V?

The EPA rates the 06 STS-V at 14 city and 20 highway. Motor trend got 17 on their mileage loop. Once you have the tranny in 6th gear engine rpm's go to nothing, and with little or no boost, that 267 cu.in. isn't that big or thirsty. Rear axle ratio is 3.23 to 1, but the final drive ratio is a heady 2.16 to 1. Ain't technology a wonderful thing.

Last tank I made 23.3 in the SS. The EPA is 16-24, so I'll need a little more highway driving to get above that rating. Oh and the average is now up to 21.5.

Just wait until we have the new NATIONAL 55mph speed limit. You're 7 over will then be 62 not 72. Your 19mpg should go to 21mpg?

Oh and oil keeps going up and the stock market down. $147 a barrel, DOW under 11,000?, and we now need to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac now.

Isn't the government great? God love'em. I feel so much better knowing they have my interests at heart.

On the Longer Ride, I did 1200 miles. Got no worse than 50mpg, meaning 24 gallons for the trip at a cost of around $96. Love it. Had gas only been $2/gallon, I would've spent a measly $50 on a gas.

Reviving an old thread here. My last post was on Jul 12, about the peak of gas prices. It's $2 and under in most places now, and still falling.

Oil closed at $59 today. Dow under 9,000. (8693)

Are you still trying to eke out that last bit of MPG?

With the price of fuel, and my discount at Giant Eagle, I paid $5 for over 15 gallons of 89 octane. All is well in the fuel world for now. This being said, when I get another car in the Spring, I'll still be looking for a car that will be faster than what I'm driving right now (mid 15's or faster), and return at least 25 mpg or better on average where now I get between 20 and 22.

Monte Carlo SS, 2000 - up
Regal GS
Bonneville SSEI
Saturn Vue Redline (although mileage might be a stretch)
Pontiac G5 GT
Cobalt SS
Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V (six speed!)
Olds Alero V6


So basically I'm saying that fuel mileage, even though gas prices have dropped significantly, is still one of the bigger factors for my decision.

Yes

I am averaging 22.2 with the SS. I am still trying to keep the mileage up. The main things are coasting, keeping the speed in check, and keeping the tire pressure up.

Speaking of tire psi, the tires currently on my Imp, state 44psi max. I run 35 in the front, and 30 in the back.
Kinda weight properitoneal. She seems pretty comfortable with that.
Haven't calculated any mileage in the last 2-3k miles.
