48,172 miles
35.2 mpg average

Today I put the snow tires back on. I wasn't in a hurry this year as it hadn't snowed until last week. That did have me working with cold tools, but at least the garage warmed up quickly with the heater on. All four snow tires were still holding air. With each wheel off, I took a quick look around and everything still looks pretty new. There is an inspection due message on my dash that appears to be little more than what I looked at so I will reset that message. With our only long road trip this summer being done with the Honda, this was a very light year of use for the VW. Most of it was last winter for skiing.

On 3/31 at about 49,600 miles, I switched back to the 'summer' tires and wheels. They really are about done, but that will be someone else's problem now. This was the first time I used the jack on my new garage floor. The 18-gauge steel sheets I bought to put under the jack weren't much of an inconvenience. Those probably were too thin as they deformed slightly under the weight, but the floor tiles show no damage. I have extra sheets so maybe next time I will just double them under the main jack wheels.

On 4/2 on our way to get the car evaluated as a trade, I probably filled it for the last time. My ownership of this car has delivered an average fuel economy of 35.2, way above the EPA ratings (27 city, 37 highway, 30 combined), exactly as I hoped from this VW engine. Even my worst tank of gas beat the city rating with 28.5mpg. My best tank was a shocking 44.1mpg and that was on a road trip of 2800 miles roundtrip that averaged 39.6. This truly was the sporty yet efficient sedan I hoped it would be. Our biggest complaint became comfort which is perhaps is more about us than the car. On long days, I felt locked into a single position in the compact cabin with my back and thighs objecting to getting back in the next day.
