Yep, I've read that too. But, I believe the 1/8" hole should be in the TOP of the thermostat to allow air out with thermostat closed. If the upper hose runs all uphill to the radiator "burping" shouldn't be required.
Another neat trick for holding the hermostat in place is to attach a rubber band to the thermostat, run it out thru the end of the thremostat housing and around a pencil. When thermostat housing is bolted down, cut the rubber band and pull it out.

I've heard that before, about drilling one or more small holes near the outside of the thermostat. Never tried it.

Today I made 2 steps forward and 1 step back.
forward = New inner & outer wheel bearings, inner bearing seal, rotors and pads.
back = come to find out one of the threaded holes that holds the caliper pins to the spindle is stripped. Guess I'll need to hit pull a part for a driver side spindle.

Took the old OptiSpark apart today. it should NOT have any oil in it. Obviously this is one of the reasons it didn't run quite right. Not to mention the worn cap and rotor. I just ordered the new seals for the timing chain cover and a new OptiSpark. It's a cheapy off ebay, I'll let you know how it looks once I get it.

IT LIVES AGAIN. At least it runs that is. Last week I had some free time so installed the new timing cover seals, optispark & water pump. Reconnected all the lines and wires and the wagon roared to life right away. It was making a strange noise form the front of the crank shaft but it doesn't seem to leak. So I changed the oil and added some Lucas oil treatment. It doesn't sound right to me but the car runs & moves under it's own power. I then cleaned out everything from the inside (it had accumulated junk while sitting for a year in the garage). I also gave it a QUICK wash while in the driveway. I am going to leave the engine alone for now while I start from the back of the car forward. First to figure out what is blocking the fuel filler neck. Then likely a rearend (3.73 & posi), ten to fix the windows 9the guide rollers seem ot wore out (common problem). After that we'll see.

I think I heard what you hear... how's the oil pressure?
Good to hear it running again. Nice too, to be able to move it around and out of your way when you need to.

I'll be working on it again this coming weekend. I'll double check the oil pressure and let you know. I did change it and add Lucas additive.

I had just been accumulating too much stuff and nothing was getting finished. I am trying to down size. It went to a good home. A guy in the Impala Caprice & Wagon club of Atlanta.
