As mentioned, not an uncommon design in airplane engines. Upside down makes the engine not so tall over the crank for better pilot visibility.

For a motorcycle, this configuration appears ideal for the location of the intake tract (air coming in from the top front and down into the engine) and the exhaust (flowing out the back of the engine).
