TRP 8-13-08

Post by markss327 »

I'll be out with the Cub Scouts at TRP, for Drag Racing 101.
I got a verbal OK from Jim Crutis, to do a small 10-15 min demo at the starting line.

We'll see how many kids show up.
NO, I will not be taking kids down the track in the Nova, not at speed anyway.

This was my follow-up to all the scout parents. FYI. :D

Wednesday, August 13th, Pack 388 was at Thompson Raceway Park. We had 7 scouts, several siblings, and 5 parents, in attendance. I consider that a good turnout for such short notice, and on a weeknight during the Summer.
We had a 10min instructional at the starting line. We ran the starting 'tree' thru several cycles. The scouts got a first hand view of the track, and found out the pavement is actually sticky! Then we all drove to the finish line, and discussed driver safety, why we wear helmets, and above all, talked about Street racing. This is a big issue with me, and I tried to convey, Drag racing is to be done where it's legal and safe - at the Drag Strip.

Bob Davis broke out is 2000 Corvette, and ran 14.00 at over 103mph

Dan Byers ran is 1988 Porsche 944 turbo, and went mid 14s. at around 97mph

I ran my '63 Nova, and ran 13.17 at 101mph.

All in all, we had a good time!
I big thanks to the track manager Jim Curtis, for allowing me to make this presentation to the scouts.

Looks to me like that was a huge success! Sorry I missed it.
If you do a followup next year, I'll be there.

Got any pics of the event? How did the kids and parents respond to it when it was complete?

Yup, pictures were taken, I just don't have 'em yet.
When I get them, I'll post them here or on Photobucket, and past the link here.

Interesting TRP rule I was unaware of, until I violated it...
"No passengers under the age of 16, can ride in a car going 13.99 or faster"
Well, my fist pass was 13.37 with Dan. I didn't even make it back to the staging lanes, and I was 'flagged' down. I thought I was leaking something on the track.... The guy pulling cars from staging, politely informed me of the rule. Really, he was nice about it. He even suggested a fix. He said, "I know you want to do the burn out, and hard acceleration, and all, that's fine. What ya do, is run to the 1000foot line, and lift". And so did. Next pass with Dan was 15.4something at 57mph.

BTW, first round of Animal, I redlighted -.014, but ran 13.21 on a .19 dial
Bob got beat, due to a .5ish reaction time
Dan went out in the second round. He's lerning the 'boost' stuff.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures. I'm afraid that I violated the rule that says you must be 16 or older to go under 14 seconds when I took my Grandaughter for a pass. No one noticed, but I won't do it again. I liked the idea of shutting down at 1000ft. GMJohn and Mostmint will need to be aware of it when they take my grandchildren to the track.
