First rallycross with the Beetle did not go so well. I found it quite difficult to drive on dirt and track does not leave a lot of room for error. Throw in a new guy on the front row in the main and well it was a bit chaotic.

Qualifying heat - knew I couldn't beat Adam but got tangled up with the other two on lap 1 and finished 3rd. not much loss here

B-main - this is a 10 lap race to determine starting position in the main. I attempted a pass on the jump but the guy I was passing was out of control and tagged the LR which sent me into the fence. Car still ran but overheated and blew up so started last in the feature.

Feature - 15 lap race and turns out starting last was good as the new guy on row 1 thought he had to go left of the white line for entry into the shortcut for joker laps and he came over and got the whole front row and more into a pileup. I was up to P5 before exiting T1. I didn't have the pace to hold it but made few mistakes so the spots I lost to faster guys I gained back when they were crashing. Ended up P5

We'll see if we settle down next week.

Up next is Wednesday evening ChampCar iRacing at Mid Ohio with the Renault Clio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Stzd6YJtU6Q Race starts at 9:30 coverage probably 9:15. With relatively low starting fuel and tank size of 6.3 I expect most people will be stopping twice for fuel in this race. If I can get to the end of lap 16 before pitting I'll probably try one stop strategy.

They need to integrate some of the car noises. It's a hard watch in complete silence and only the guy talking. The track seems entertaining though.

I'll bring this up with Tim the broadcaster. I notice that too the car sounds are usually so low you can barely hear it.

CCiS Mid Ohio:

18 cars, I qualified P7. I did a couple practices but didn't go crazy on prep. I missed the practice race as we were at KMP. For some odd reason the league decided to make this a 2 stop race. I tried to make it on one but too much saving was needed - but the practice actually helped me find some speed.

I had to deal with some hungry dogs on lap 1 after I made a conservative decision to get in line before T1, which ended up making a pass at the end of thunder valley. After the dust cleared I was 6th but too far away from the top 5 to catch the draft. Took a few laps to put a gap on the guy behind. In the last segment of the race one of the fast guys who started in the back was closing in. I was putting down some really hot laps but he was still closing the gap. With about 2 to go he made a mistake which cost him about a second and that gave me enough breathing room so I ended up P6. Best result of the season and has me P10 in points overall.

Up next on Sunday at 8:10PM is XSLR rallycross at Charlotte with the Beetle Lite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2j6IwuvE3Y I still don't know how to drive rallycross well so I'm going to do my best not to be last. Regarding points, turns out P4 (Kevin) is really fast and P2 (Tyler) is really slow. We'll see what Tyler learns for this week. I'm at a big disadvantage here for the next 3 races.

I put in a bunch of time practicing and learning how to drive this vehicle in rallycross. The best way I could figure out how to get around this course was to use handbrake (rear brakes only) on the dirt corners. I don't have a handbrake so I used the clutch pedal for the handbrake. This meant a lot more footwork than usual. Took quite a while to develop and be able to repeat the choreography for this event. Turns out my method is quite competitive on a fresh track which netted me a P3 qualifying position out of 10 drivers.

In the qualifying heat I was P1 in my group of 3 but inconsistency killed me and I finished 3rd. (winners from each heat are P1-P3 starters in the main)

In the B-main there were 7 cars (finish order will determine starting positions P4-P10 in the main) I purposely laid back at the start to avoid carnage on the entrance road to the course. Sure enough there was a big wreck as they tried 5 wide but there was a late car ricochet which ended up in my path. Still inconsistent I ended up 6 of the 7 in this race which had me starting P8 in the main.

In the main I also chose to lay back at the start but this time they got through the firs turn clean so it was no help. However the leaders clashed at the end of the entrance ramp and one of them got wrecked so I picked up one spot right away. I was definitely not at my hot lap pace, but really only made one big mistake which cost me a solid 13 seconds. I got spun in the infield and lost a few seconds trying to find my way back on the track. In a race of least mistakes I was ahead of a bunch of the drivers so I ended up P5.

My main points competitor Kevin had a bad race as he got wrecked lap 1 and finished last, which kept me 3rd in points. Still need Bobby to miss a race in the next 6 and perform. It'll be an interesting race to the end with 6 races to go.

Next race is 9/15.

After that CCiS is racing at Fuji with the Mustang FR500S on 9/18. coverage starts 9:20 PM https://www.youtube.com/live/KaTQOUho3d ... b2GrdkN5aG

XSLR Season 8 Race 12 Report: The Knockhill race with XSLR was a disaster. By some fluke the other cars in my qualifying heat crashed and I won that. Well that put me on the front row for the main. This track is narrow and I was hoping to let the carnage happen in front of me. Well starting up front I had to go. I did not get the best standing start and I noticed a car coming up to my left. To give him a bit of room I drifted right but there were two cars to my right and I caused a big pileup. Then a car in back hit my RF on the way through and broke my suspension and I was done. Finished dead last grrr.

ChampCar iRacing 2024 Season Race 9 Report: Then there was the race with ChampCar at Fuji. It was relatively lightly attended and I still managed a P10 start despite this being my first race on this track. I gave up a spot or two in the early going and ended up stuck behind a couple cars that were definitely slower. I was not getting good exit speed off the final corner so couldn't manage a safe pass, so I pitted early for some clean track. This paid off as by the time the guys ahead of me were done with their pits I was ahead. I had targeted putting in enough fuel to do 30 laps with a cushion. I think I might have put in an extra .3 and as it turned out I was still a bit short so I ended up having to save just a bit. I hadn't practiced that so it was a bit clunky, but I had a decent gap to the car behind. I almost gave it up spinning in the last corner on 2nd last lap but was able to recover and hold my spot. Still P10 in points with 3 races to go.

Tonight raced with XSLR at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The link was not posted til the race was about to happen so here it is though a bit late: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMjBasI5vu8

We are racing dirt ovals with the Legends car for the rest of the season. Tonight we're at Knoxville. I'm 3rd in points with 2 guys close behind.

Lol all the broadcast races I participate in now have overseas commentary.

XSLR Season 8 Race 13 report: First race with the Legends car. These are like 3/4 size purpose built race cars with no downforce and motorcycle engines. They wind up to 11,000 RPMs. Shaking off the rust on dirt ovals, I got in some practice and a couple hints from Adam the night before. With this car/track the key is to keep it from digging in too much. Maximum grip is obtained with just the right slip angle on the rear tires. Too much and the wheels dig in and lots of speed lost.

The track conditions change quite a bit and that is hard to practice. Even 8 cars on the track change it quite a bit - this put me at a significant disadvantage in the last 10 laps or so. The other issue here is with 2 fast repairs and plenty of full course yellows it's hard to gain advantage if someone makes a mistake. Taking that in consideration I'm happy with the P4 finish.

Due to penalties on both guys I'm competing with for P3 in points, I am still P3 even though they both crossed the line ahead of me. Bobby is really close behind and he missed two races so far - he's got more driving skill so I will need some kind of help to hold that spot. Kevin lost more ground as he got a 10 second penalty from passing a car on a restart.

After getting some bad luck last week I'm out of the top 3 in points. All I can do is the best I can do and see what happens.

XSLR Season 8 race 16: Lernerville

This track is a handful - there is no outer fence for over 1/2 the track so you can get really lost out there - it's downhill. Also exit of final turn you can run over the ridge and hit the wall. Should be harrowing lol

ChampCar iRacing 2024 event 14: Nordschleife

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7hmrhRJJAQ coverage should start around 9:15pm on 10/30.

This time we're racing the ND MX5 with a fixed setup provided by ChampCar that makes it drivable. In the practice race I led from start to finish with 0 incident points. Admittedly the big guns were all absent.

XSLR Season 8 race 16: Lernerville race report:

The fastest line here is along the top. It requires riding the rim and lots of precision or you go over the crest and out of the track. I could not do it consistently so I went for a more traditional racing line, reasoning that there would be more grip in the corners in the less uses section of the track. Qualified P2 and won my heat race so started P2. Had some inconsistency during the race and ended up P5 though only a few seconds back of P2. My main competition in season points was unable to attend so all I had to do was take the start to lock in P3 in points. Top 5 get paid some $ and 3rd pays $100 and a trophy. It'll be my first iRacing league trophy :)

Season 9 starts in January so not expecting any Sunday evening racing til then
