Trick for Expanding Stiff Springs

Post by Maverick »

Saw this posted on the Lincoln forum. Seems like it would work in some cases. If the pennies didn't extend the spring enough, I expect the pennies could be removed, one at a time, and replaced with something thicker. I struggled once with a clutch pedal spring and think this would have been easier than what I did.
Saw this on YouTube: put the spring end hook into a vise tightly. Then you can bend the spring to the side far enough to insert a penny or washer between the first coil. Keep doing this for several pennies, then bend the spring in the opposite direction and repeat. After about ten pennies on each side, you maybe extended the spring by at least a half inch. Keep doing this until you have enough extension to make the connections. Then use pliers to remove the pennies.

Ha, thats kinda slick.. and pennies are certainly cheaper than washers.

At what point do we start drilling pennies into washers?? (Seems like they could be used for 1/4 and possibly 5/16" bolts?? Could add a very subtle custom touch.
