TRP 4-17-21 New Season

Post by Basement Paul »

Tomorrow is TRP's opening day with just a TNT race. Gates open at 9am and time trials only from 10-5. I plan to take the Ranger. The air looks to be pretty good with the air density not getting much over 500ft all day.

I believe FredV6 and GM Johnny are planning to go too. Not sure about 'Smoker yet with the new FIVE-OH.

Should be fun to get numbers on the Ranger and see if it can hang with the Canyon or if I'll need to chip it...

Finally we were able to get back to T-N-T on this Saturday. Weather was cloudy, 40 degrees.
BP, 'Smoke and GMJohnny were also there.
BP's brought his new 2020 Black Ford Ranger since his Little Red truck was not quit ready.
We wanted to find out what truck was faster, the Black truck or the White truck.
White truck - reaction 0.2817, 60 ft. 2.1661, et 14.8014, mph 92.91.
black truck - reaction 0.0775, 60 ft. 2.1817, et 14.5049, mph ??.?? winner by .5007 et delta 0.2965 and going away.

My best pass of the day - reaction 0.0123, 60 ft. 2.1737, et 14.7973, mph 93.08.

'Smoke had his new 5.0 there, deep into 13's, don't know his best time.
GMJohnny had the 442 there, he was also well into the 13's.
Not sure if BP improved his number after our run, he was over 95 mph.

They can post their best number.
Great line up
Great line up
It was very cold but TRP is ALWAYS great fun!

It was great to be at the dragstrip again!! Really only the 2nd time I've ever been in a V8-stick with some power.

I made three passes, a 13.24, 13.49 and 13.04. I didn't get a MPH on the first run, but the other were both 110.9 & 110.4. On the plus side, I did have a .05 RT and a -.005 Felt nice to be close on the tree for the first outing of the season in a totally new car.

This thing is crazy strong over 5000 rpm, but getting a good launch on a cold, slippery track in a high HP rwd stick is not something I have a ton of experience with. I forgot to turn traction control OFF on my 1st pass, so no burnout, bunch of traction-control-limited-wheelspin, 7500 rpm, shift, little wheelspin, 7000 rpm, grab 3rd, cross the finish at 7000+ in 3rd. 13.24 @ unknown. This was frustrating, because I really just wanted to see my MPH. I knew I'd struggle launching/shifting, but MPH is a nice reliable indicator.

2nd pass I remembered to turn off traction control, but I had the trans in 1st gear for the burnout, so not a lot of wheel speed for the RPM, but better than nothing. Lotta footwork doing manual trans burnouts that I'm not used to! Similar to the first run, although I briefly lost a little traction at probably 800-1000ft in the left lane. I think there was moisture seeping onto the track, saw another car have an issue in same spot. 13.49 @ 110.95 -- wow almost 111!

3rd pass, did the burnout in 2nd gear, saw some actual tiresmoke in my mirror. Got it staged up and baaawwwwhhhhhggg... but wound it up, shifted 3-4 at prob 1100ft, no real difference. 13.04 @ 110.41

Really nice first outing with it. It has a factory line-lock, but I didnt use it because I wasn't interested in smoking the shit out of these tires. Although it would probably be pretty helpful in doing a very controlled burnout. It also has Launch Control, which you can set from 3000-5500 rpm. I engaged it, and you can just hold your foot to the floor and it holds the RPM, but I dont know if it just goes full power immediately once you let the clutch out, but seemed like it would just blow the tires off, I was having trouble at 2500+ rpm today. I balanced that with the need to make sure its ready for a 3000+ mile road trip in a month. ;-)

This thing will easily go bottom 12s with a good tire and good driver. Good thing I already had a new engine on order for the Chevelle before I ever set foot in this thing!!

I wasn't really sure what the Ranger was good for going into today. I saw a magazine test of the exact same truck at 14.6, and I can normally best magazine times. Today was no exception. Dad and I were able to square up for the first time run. I treed him and with every shift I was able to put a little more ground on him so I felt pretty good going through the traps that I was somewhere in the mid 14s. As it turns out, I was exactly a mid 14 with a .50 at 95mph.
My second time run netted me a 14.53 but was weird with a track delay after I did my burnout so I wanted one more. The cool thing about that run was I beat a 2006 or so Mustang GT heads up by a couple tenths.
Last run I was more prepared and I kept the truck a little warmer this time. I was able to get a 14.44 at 96mph. For a 4cyl truck with only 1800 miles, I was pretty happy with that! I think in the fall if I'm not trying to get a number in the S10, I could get a 14.2 with a little better preparation.

Like Dave said, it was great to be back at the track. Hopefully next time I'll be there with the S10.

I was able to put down my personal best of 13.42 with a 60’ of 2.00 @ 104.19. I raced Dave twice,
and felt pretty good about myself against his beast. I was trying to learn my new gear package, but
Dave had to learn way more, so the two times I raced him, I was in the lead at the 1/8 when his Mustang decided
it had enough of looking at my taillights and blew by me. Good fun!

I'm going to head to Thompson tonight with the S10. The weather looks very favorable. Hoping for Mid-11's with the big wheels on it. We'll see if the track can hold.

Busy day, it lead to a last minute decision to go to TRP with BP and 'Smoke.
My 1st pass was my best of the night, 0.1615 lite, 2.1315 60 ft., 14.56 @93.68.
BP and I were in the 8 Truck class and we both made it to the final.
The announcer highlighted the Father and Son Truck Eliminator Final.

I had bit of a stressful day leading up to my outing at TRP. I ended up getting there closer to 6pm which didn't give me much cool down time. I pulled into lane 8 which usually has slick tire cars and runs faster than the other lanes so I ended up getting four time runs. I was skeptical of the track conditions so I didn't really attack at the line and my first pass was an 11.43 @ 119.47. I was already super happy with that especially running my stock heavier rims.
At this point I was eyeing up an 120mph pass, so I pulled the driver's headlight out which is good for usually another .5mph or more. Next pass was a .39 at 120.42mph and again super happy! My third pass I tried getting into the converter a little harder and although the track held, my time across the board was about the same at 11.40 and a 1.69 60'.
At this point the staging lanes were closing in 15 minutes, so I parked way back in the lanes to ice the truck down while all the other cars got ran out. I KNOW this truck is faster when the engine is cool. I was the last pass of time runs and it paid off: 11.28 @ 121.20 and 1.65 60'. More than I expected out of this combo.

The first two rounds of eliminations were pretty easy. As long as I didn't redlight, they were simple victories. As it turns out, I cut a .008 light in round 2, but not on purpose. It was that guy in the white truck in the finals that I was a little worried about. I should have turned my clock back a bit at the tree after that .008 light, but when dad's light went green (and it looked like a good light) I apparently got a little excited and went .02 red... The saddest part about it, is that I totally guessed an 11.46 dial and ran an 11.46!

So congrats to dad for taking home the #1 trophy. And to Dave for sticking around and making a real solid pass in the 5.0. I know he went at least a few rounds in the cog-drive.

I'm really looking forward to the fall when I can put on my lightweight wheels and get some real cooldown time in even better air. I really believe there's an 11.00 in this truck. Then, of course, I'll be trying to get a 10.99... But I'm not counting chickens just yet.

I was on the fence about coming out last night because I had to put in a change for work at 5pm, and I wasn't sure how long it was going to take. Fortunately, I was done and out the door by 5:30pm, and I'm glad I went.

I had played with the launch control a little bit and did some practice launches on my drive there, just leaving it set at 3000 RPM. I was still a little clubby on the controls because unlike my Cobalt, when you activate Launch Control, its on *all* the time. Push in the clutch, any amount of gas, and it holds it at 3000.

My first time run (against Fred) was a promising 13.07 @ 114! On my 2nd timerun (we weren't sure we were even going to get one!), I got a better launch ran 12.89 @ 112 -- solidly in the 12s, woohoo! and more MPH than the Chevelle has ever run

I got pretty lucky the first two rounds -- I'm not stellar on the tree with this car, but I haven't red-lighted either. 2nd round I had to run against a tuned SHO Taurus, dialed 12.45 to my 12.90. My .18 RT should've lost me that race, but he was way worse at .37 He got right up to my door by like 300ft, and I did everything I could to keep my nose out front and held on, even touching the brakes in the traps, 13.06(102) on 12.89 vs 12.49 on 12.45

Also, by the 2nd round, the track seemed to be getting better for me, and the 3000 launch really bogged it. It was certainly a factor in my 3rd round loss to Oldsmobile-Mike, where I got beat every which way.

They ran a time run lane, and I bumped the Launch Control up to 3800. I also figured out to leave the launch control option up on the screen, turn it off to do a better burnout, and turn it back on as I approach the line. That got me 12.79 @ 112

It was really great seeing Fred and Paul in the Truck final, and Paul running incredible numbers!!

Originally I wasn't planning to go to TRP. During supper I changed my mind because I wanted to watch BP's
preparation for Saturday's Renegade 11.50 Index Class. I arrived late and they were cleaning up a mess,
so I was only able to get one time run in. BP was there and Tony had his '69 there.
BP had only 3 runs all night, the last being a tight red in Animal. one of his runs was 11.5...
The '69 went out in the 2nd round of Stock Eliminator.
So many cars, Truck class had to wait for a lane. In the end there were only 5 entries.
I had a come from behind 1st round win. Then there were only three trucks, one already had a bye run.
So it was head to head high card gets the free pass, I drew a 5 of spades, the other fella had the 3 of spades.
Here are my 3 passes.
Time run - low fuel, no prep - 0.3081 reaction, 2.1760 60', 14.7774 @ 92.93
1st round - Dialed in - 14.72 - 0.1072 reaction, 2.1405 60', 14.7701 @ 82.86, on the brakes, win
2nd round - 5 of spades beats 3 of spade, did not run
3rd round - Dialed in - 14.68 - 0.1655 reaction, 2.1557 60', 14.6969 @ 93.12 for the Truck Eliminator trophy!

As always, TRP continues to be great fun!

My first run with about 200lbs in the bed and a full tank of gas was 11.79 so I clearly had work to do to get to the 11.50. I took the headlight out and took 120lbs out of the truck for my second pass. Still keeping the engine warm, this got me to an 11.56. Close enough.

I dialed a .53 for the first round of animal, but went .05 red, spun the tires a little, and then again worse in 2nd, and got a .63. SO, I'm going to run a bunch of gas out of it before the weekend in hopes to get closer to the 11.50 mark. I'm sure the track will be better in the sun, with almost all race cars there, so traction shouldn't be an issue like on Wed night. Then if I have to take the rest of the weight out, I will.

I have a video of dad's win, but will have to load it up to youtube first.
