replacing clutch - what to do with the flywheel/press plate
The clutch disc on the Saturn is about worn out. I bought another one. Now I'm trying to figure out if I need to get the pressure plate and flywheel machined. Anyone have any past experience replacing only the clutch disc?

That pressure plate has seen a lot of heat and abuse in the last few years of racing. Now is not the time to cheap out on your one connection between the engine and rear wheels. I'd replace both the disk and pressure plate and resurface the flywheel.

I agree on the pressure plate replacement. You're looking right at it, and it's not that expensive. If it's not in the budget though, and you don't have any chatter coming from the clutch pedal, I'd just lightly hand sand it with about 180 grit paper, clean it with some brake cleaner, repeat, and reinstall.

BP I trust you have history with that technique.
For reference the clutch is $140. The pressure plate is $280 more.

Every flywheel I've ever done that I wasn't replacing because of cracking or heat, I've done that to with success. I'm not sure how many races are on your pressure plate, but those typically die without much warning. On the plus side, yours isn't dealing with a lot of torque or weight, which will kill it sooner.

The clutch disc was made in 2005. What happened prior to 2011 I am not sure. I know it did some autocrossing and SCCA solo events. It's been over 6000 miles of racing since we got it.
I measured the old disc at 7.3 mm and operating range is 6-8 mm. It looks close to the rivets, but then again so does the brand new one. Right now I'm thinking the flywheel is wearing faster than the clutch.

I would be more concerned at this point, how many heat cycles it's been through, and how effective the material is. I'd also be concerned about the age of the pressure plate. 10 years is pretty old IMO. Me, I'd change it. The flywheel is a hunk of steel (at least the important part), and as long as it's flat and no stress cracks, I'd roll with it.
