I was just watching the offset crach test for the 59 Impala. That really shocked me. I'd like to see it with a 73 Impala.
While on the offset crash test subject I saw this:

which should be manadatory viewing for anyone who wants tb buy a "Smart" car.

We had a motorcyclist hit a bear up here - no video though.
I have a video that plays in my head of a deer flashing in front of my friend's jeep on a West Virginia highway at 70 mph only to get halfway in front of the pickup in the lane next to us. The back half of the deer spun underneath the rear wheel of the jeep. I wish I could download that technicolor video.
Moose - very bad - no close calls yet

The IIHS does the offset crash because it simulates one of the worst kind of accidents that happen - at least one where good engineering/technology can help reduce/prevent injuries. I guarantee there are more offset crashes than bear crashes, and there are more injuries from offset crashes than hitting a deer or live animal.GMJohnny wrote:I want to see a crash test with something real.
The 59 Chevy crash is the most "promotional" video I have seen from IIHS. Usually they stick to the basics. But it does show one of the many ways a late model is better than the older car.

The most fun roads locally follow rivers. Twisty, curvy, and hilly. The truckers like to fly through at 60mph (posted 45-55) and deer kind of hang out near rivers. It's not uncommon to see half a deer, then 1/8mi up the road, the other half. (Blech)
Thinking about things like that make me reconsider my desire for a motorcycle. Deer get swatted by trucks, do good damage to cars, but it's gotta HURT a motorcycle (rider).
