KOI Dirt Drags North vs South '24

Post by Basement Paul »

So a few weeks back I made the (roughly) 330 mile journey to Osgood, IN in the S10 with the Raptor in tow for a couple days of dirt drag racing. I met the Reed family there. Friday night was trucks and kids quad classes and Saturday was all quads, dirt bikes, and SXS. We lucked out with the weather as it was nice all weekend but did get into the 30's the first night and mid 40's the 2nd night.
The track was really well prepared on Friday and in practice I was able to get a best of 4.16 with the S10. I entered the gas 4.5 index class, the hot gas 4.0 index class, and the 2WD class. There was A LOT of time between practice and when I got to race and I took this time to study the .400 pro tree. This paid off in eliminations with most of my wins coming on holeshots. I had several .0x lights with my best being a .05. Normally a good light with a truck if you just watch the tree, is around .20. The quick summary is that I won the 12 truck, double elimination gas 4.5 class having to beat my opponent in the finals twice since I had an early loss (breakout). This is my first gas 4.5 win. I've runner-upped a couple times, so this was fun to win at the biggest race of the year.
I've never run the hot gas 4.0 class, but with consistent high 4.2s during eliminations, I was able to get to the finals on my holeshots where I had to beat my opponent twice for the win. I got him on the first run, but he was too much for me on the 2nd run so I got runner up there. I was pretty happy as my opponents were all 4wd and most of them were race trucks.
The 2wd class had a few street type trucks, and two FULL race trucks with paddle tires. The one truck was around 4.0 but the other guy I was basically just as fast as and ended up in the semis against him for a shot at the finals. If I cut a light, I would have beat him. I tried a different line out of the groove in the left lane, and ultimately messed up my staging routine. We were basically dead even off the line and he was about .05 quicker. But if I had even a half decent light I win that race and at least get into the finals. OH well, not a bad night with my street truck.

On Saturday night I was trying to learn how to launch my quad in 2nd gear and really wasn't doing very well. Then, it seems, I basically forgot how to launch altogether and wound up stalling it a couple times. It really wouldn't have mattered as these were all the fastest guys, and even at my best would not have made it more than a couple rounds in any class. I ended up pulling out of a couple classes, and I let Tony run my quad in one of them. Even he was bested by the competition quickly, so I didn't feel too bad.

Hopefully by next year I'll have the Corvette somewhat close in times to the S10 as I would rather race the car. I will still have a traction and weight advantage over the S10, but be about 150HP down. We'll see how that goes. Not sure if I'll go the the North South race again, but it was a fun experience. I'll try to get a couple videos posted too.
