I was breaking in a new set of Toyo drag radials last night. I don't have any history with this brand, but so far, they're not quite as good as the Mickey Thompsons. They hooked up OK in time runs off the line, but spun HARD into 2nd gear every time, all night. My three time runs were 11.91, 11.89, and 11.86.
Knowing it's going to get a little cooler I dialed 11.84. As I'm pulling up to stage in round 1, they're mopping up water in my lane. Luckily, I was lined up against a nice guy in a slow Silverado (dialed 17.10), but he's just not good and I know it. He cuts a .62 light to my .05. I spun and had to pedal, but still caught him way early and went 12.09 @ 99mph. Easy win.
Round 2 was against Ron Reed in his silver El Camino. He's usually a pretty steady competitor, and was dialed 12.20 to my 11.89. I dialed down assuming I'm going to spin. I kind of got caught up watching Ron's light come down and was thinking, jeez that was a crappy light, and in the meantime my light is coming down.... He went .17 to my .15. But being in lane one this time instead of lane 2, my truck didn't spin off the line. I caught him pretty quick and thought I had plenty of room when I was coasting and hit the brakes. I went 11.91 on the .89 dial at only 102mph to Ron's 12.35.
So now I'm in the finals (only 8 trucks) against a bigger Ford, I think an F250 dialed 14.82 to my 11.83. He cut a .39 light to my .09 and ran 15.69. Needless to say, this wasn't a very competitive run. I ran a 12.66 at 81mph and still had a .3 second margin of victory.
Apparently you don't have to be that good to win, just better than the other guy. Hey, I'll take the trophy!

I'll be back next week I think too.

I took the Vette out again with no real expectations, and pretty much got none with a first round loss, after only one time run. On the time run, I had an excellent .02 light and went 13.22 @ 106. 1.96 60-foot. With no tach, I figured to shift 1-2 at 40, 2-3 at 60 and 3-4 at ??? That was my game plan.

First round, my downfall was a .20 light, vs .14 for my opponent in a super-clean GS 455 Stage 1. I ran 13.23 on 13.20 dial-in, and he went 12.94 on his 12.90 dial-in. MOV was .0367

But considering the numbers, two runs, a long time apart, and within .01 on ET, the Vette was working, i just blew it on the tree.

The Mustang was not as quick as my butt dyno thought after I replaced the mufflers. Ended up being a tenth quicker and over one MPH faster at the big end, which got me the 14 second pass I wanted (14.9984). That's with the top down and the spare tire still in. Apparently GM went 14.9982 with his 442 so technically he's quicker than me, but for the record, we raced heads up twice in time runs and I have the white slip both times. :D

I went -.02 red in the first round, so my night was over quick. It was fun watching GM lay down a great run in the first round and watch 32V make two real solid passes for the trophy. Ran right on his dial in the finals!

I’ve learned that driving a stick shift car with drum brakes is not the ideal bracket
racing package. The sweet spot of good traction and the tires going up in smoke is
a very small one. I do enjoy the challenge of it, but I can’t see this car making it to
the drag strip 5 times a summer. My best ET is 14.9982, best MPH is 92.5, best 60’ is 2.10
and my best reaction time was .014. I made it one round utilizing my best reaction time
and best ET on a 14.97 dial. I lost in round 2, putting a .06 light down, but a bit of wheel
spin had me .25 off my number. The highlight of the night was definitely watching the
Canyon put the El Camino away. Good night at the strip!

I took the 90Vette out again this week, sorta spurred on by my two runs within .01 last week. My first past, I was back in the 12s, at 12.91 @ 108. 1.90 60-ft. My second time run, I bogged it pretty good out of the hole, 13.20 @ 108.

I dialed 12.95 for the first round. I was pretty determined not to bog it. I left harder, but the traction was just amazing off the line. Still pulled the engine down. I got a 1.85 60-foot, my best with this car (I think), but I went red -.06, and missed 2-3 shift. 13.23. Other guy saw my red and just dogged it.

Last night was odd. Everyone gets to the track, pulls into the staging lanes, then we start the sitting. Jim Curtis says we'll be delayed 15 min or so, and that turned into over an hour and a half while we waited for Kuhnle Trucking to get filmed by Fox 8. Even Jim was commenting politely on the ridiculousness of the situation. Apparently the owners thought it more important to get cheap publicity than take care of it's core customers.
That being said, everyone got two passes before eliminations, and they moved into that relatively quickly and luckily there was no breakage last night at all.
With the air a little better, I thought I'd go back to taking my headlight out for a little more MPH. My two time runs were a cool engine spinning 11.69 and a normal 11.67.

Round one was a white Charger dialed 12.25 to my 11.65. I cut a .08 to his .22. Needless to say I caught him quickly and won with a .73 to his 12.38.
Round two was Mike in his Black Charger dialed 12.29 to my 11.65. He went -.002 red to my .013 green, so I win. Went 11.68 on the free pass.
Round three was a newer Burgundy 5.0. I was dialed 11.67 to his 12.48. I went .04 to his .02. Double breakout with my .65 to his .45. Pretty tight at the line.
Round four was the semi-finals with only three cars left we pulled cards for the bye. I was first to pick with a 10, the other guys picked a 4 and 5 so I sat out this run into the finals.
Everyone was breaking out, so I dialed down to a 11.65 against Don Samburg (sp?) in his Hellcat Challenger dialed 11.15. I cut a .0006 light to his .11 so I had a pretty good advantage. At the stripe another double breakout. I crossed first by .01 only. My 11.61 beat his 11.03.

This was my first Street win in quite awhile. I liked that all my opponents were reasonable close in ET too. So despite the waiting, it worked out.

I took the 90Vette out again, got two time runs, and then in the first round, I'm lined up against some 40-something gasser type coupe with open headers and slicks dialed in at 10.00. In Stock Class. I motioned to Grant when he was calling up our times, and he goes "well he's got a couple grooves in his tires". I was disgusted. I went -.05 red and after hitting 2nd gear, didnt even bother to run it out.

Whatever the weather is next week, I'm out.

This track is a long way from my house - not likely to show up til they figure out how to run the program. Rookie owners on the learning curve

Unfortunately, this is not rookie owners, in my opinion. This is all the same crew for years. AWD cars in FWD class, simply because they are 4cyl is super common. Slicks in Stock is pretty common too.

But last night's example was just over the top.

Well, I went out again this week, despite my annoyances from last week. Took the Mustang this time. Different car, same result, 1st round loss. I don't think I've won a round this year. (maybe 1, with someone else's redlight)

My first time run, I just wanted to short-shift at 6500 (instead of 7500). My first time run was 12.91 @ 113. 2nd time run, I missed 1-2, only went 13.41 @ 107.

First round, I dialed 12.90. Up against a 14.4x BMW. Crummy light, and when I shifted 1-2, I had to pedal it to get the *clutch* to grab.. uh oh, dont like that. I'm now feeling behind and wind it out. Clutch felt soft/mushy on 2-3 too Broke out, 12.87 on 12.90. I passed him just before the traps, but everytime I've hit the brakes recently, I've lost, so I stayed in it. I had a 1.92 60-foot, which seemed pretty solid.

I at least got to drive home with the benefit of full headlights. :-) I had an after-8-pm change for work that I had to do anyway.

I had my best pass in the S-10 on my first time run where I let it get a little cooler than normal and went 11.53 @ 119mph. Next two time runs were a .60 and .65 I think. None of that matters when you go -.05 against a total slouch in the first round. Oh well, we'll try again next week, and try to get my head in the game...

After my first time run where I didn't do enough burnout, and then remembering one of the two rear tires was literally brand new, the car was pretty consistent. My first run was lots of pedaling and a 14.99. My next two time runs were a 14.87 and 14.85 going into eliminations, and my lights were all pretty good at .05 and .07.
I dialed a 14.82 in the first round against a no helmet limited 14.00 opponent. Pretty much a gimme win if I go green. I went .02 green and lifted to a 15.01 since he was a half second under his dial and WAY ahead.
Round 2 was a regular in his blue Dodge Magnum. I dialed 14.84 to his 14.40. I cut an .05 light to his .19... I whacked the brakes at the stripe and went .85 to his .48, so pretty solid win.
Got the bye run in the 3rd round and flat out was a 14.82 on an .80 dial. In hindsight I should have sat that one out since I got less than 30 seconds of cool down time for the next round.
Round 4 was against Mike Milnar in his black Dodge Charger dialed 12.16. I dialed a 14.82 since I JUST did it 3 minutes earlier, but apparently being warm is a good thing for a 5.0 and I went 14.76 to Mikes 12.16. And I gave up .03 on the tree, so I had no chance.

Still a fun night out. Got the Mustang's best times by a bunch. The 14.7632 and 93.86 was my best by a bunch. I ran with the top up, and I took the spare out and made sure I had the tank around a 1/4. So this was about as good as it is going to get with this car. Not sure I'll race it much if ever again with the impending Corvette project being designed for a beating. Now just clean all the rubber off the rear quarters and cruise it.

My time run with dad was fun too. Didn't think I'd actually be able to stay ahead of the Canyon, but he was in my driver's side window the whole track.

Looking forward to next year for sure.
