Today I found out my stroker parts showed up at Hutter's. So I ran over there to check them out. Cool stuff!

Now I'm waiting to hear when would be a good time to bring the motor in for the upgrades.

Today I was a little burned out from working, so I decided to heat up the garage and start the engine removal process. Wednesday I ordered an engine cradle for my LS transportation purposes. I got one without wheels so it would ride better in the back of my truck. I have a forklift if I need to move it. I put that together first, then moved more inventory out of my way, and began tearing all the front accessories off. It's a process, so I took my time and got all that done. Tomorrow I'm going to get the engine hoist from 32V's place and keep picking at it. The radiator is next, then probably most of the engine harness and lots of vacuum and vent lines. I don't expect to get underneath it until maybe Sunday.

If I failed to mention, I got a call from Trevor at Hutter's letting me know this would most likely be a good time to bring the motor in to get the stroker kit and cam done. So that's what I'm going to do so hopefully we'll be running and tuned by the middle of April.

Yesterday Dave came over and helped me with the teardown for a few hours, and I gave it a few more hours today. Unfortunately small things seem to take a long time like spark plugs and header bolts. I think all I have left is bellhousing bolts, torque converter bolts, and engine mounts.
I'll probably mess with it tomorrow afternoon, and then call in for backup once I'm sure it's hoist ready.

Last night I finished loosening everything up, and today we took it out of the truck with very little drama. Off to Hutters this afternoon.

In a effort to cut down on underhood temperatures, I decided to wrap the headers. This is no small task. The headers were tacked to the tailpipes, and the headers would not come out with the bellhousing in the way. A couple hours later and the headers were out.
I was able to get one wrapped today and sometime this week I'll get the passengers side done and put them back in. I'm trying to be careful to keep them as tight to the pipes as possible since space for installing the bellhousing bolts is limited.

Hopefully it's worth the effort.

Got both headers wrapped and might put them back in the truck for now. No word on the motor yet, but I won't bother anyone until next week.

Trevor from Hutter's just called with an update and some questions. So we kind of guessed the chamber size of the heads when we ordered the pistons in hopes to get to 11:1 compression. The reality is that the chambers got opened up some when I got them CNC ported, and it actually dropped my compression a little. Because I don't really want to start machining the heads anymore, I'm going to end up around 10.5:1 when it's done. The reality though, is that I was probably down to maybe around 9.6:1 after the cnc port work, instead of the stock 9.8:1, so it's still going to be an improvement by about .75:1 over what I had, plus the extra 37 cubic inches, plus the bigger cam. I'm still hoping for around a 45-50hp bump.
I asked him about starting and driving the truck on the tune that's in there, and he suggested bringing the computer in and he could make some adjustments to it based on what we're doing to the motor, and I could at least drive it there for a final tune instead of having to trailer it. He also would like the intake manifold for the engine dyno, so I'll drop both of those things off.
There was still a question as to how long it would take to get the head gaskets, but hopefully in the next couple weeks it will be a complete motor again.

That's a great point -- Tony, Dave, and I screwed around for a while trying to get the 408 started by just modifying my 383's tune. Lot of screwing around, although we did get it started and running. The next day, I went out and generated a new base tune and it started/ran on the 2nd attempt. Ran way better. I'm sure he's doing something similar. Too many differences to just tweak a couple settings here and there.

I actually asked him if he thought it would run on the current tune, because of what happened to you after the motor swap. So it's your fault.

It'll be like the slot car days - bigger magnets and armature rewinds.

Yesterday I dropped off some parts to Hutter and got to see the short block all assembled. Should be together next week sometime and if I'm lucky, it might get on the engine dyno too.
