Qualifying projects?

Post by ttamrettus »

Does changing brake pads on my wife's Accord count as a project?
I do have to do the front and backs.

Here's how much the internet has killed the world I used to know.
I went to 3 auto parts stores and NOT 1 had the pads.
AutoZone, Ace Auto Parts, and Advance Auto Parts.
I finally ordered them online from AutoZone.

How about taking my company car to the shop for it's scheduled maintenance? Count as a project?

I guarantee that if she owned a Malibu the parts would be in stock. But it is nice to be able to order the parts online.

Autozone had a master cylinder and engine mounts for my 1975 Corvette in stock.

It could also be you are the only one who does their own work on a Honda Accord - the rest of them take it to the shop or buy a new one when it needs brakes.

The dealer wants to charge a few hindred bucks.
Not worth it to me.
The dealer does do pretty much everything else.

We used to charge two flat rate hours per axle for pads & rotors. That would also include a caliper service (cleaning sliders). Two hours + $85 + parts = about $320 per axle depending on the car. Mechanics loved it because it'd take them about 35-40 min per axle....

One of my coworkers just got her brakes done on an LHS at the Firestone store and it was a little less than $250 per axle. Getting parts at Autozome would have cost less than half of that - even buying the premium ceramic pads.

It is highway robbery. I smell a side business.

Side business? I dabbled there once in my first stint at TRW. I took a guy's car home to do a brake job (mid 90s Grand Am).

While it went relatively well, I could see the pitfalls -- what if the parts store gets you wrong or bad parts? Maybe the caliper bolt breaks or something else. What about when they start squealing 3 weeks down the road and they want you to do something about it?

If I'm going to spend time in the garage, it's gonna be working on my stuff, not trying to save a co-worker a few dollars. For me, I'd rather find computer-related jobs for side money. Saves me money on Go-Jo. :)

No but I put the best stock head on it, and it can pull the wheels when I dump the clutch.
