TRP 7-25-2018

Post by TireSmoker »

Went out to TRP tonight with Tony to make some practice runs in his car before we head to Dragway 42 next Thus (8/2) to run with some guys from chevelles.com. The Northern Ohio Chevelle Club show is next weekend and, like last year, they will have a dedicated lane for the Chevelles. This is regional show and many people come from out of state. Tony lined up a couple match races, so we just wanted to make sure everything was working well and I hadn't raced his car in a while.

On the first time run, the car in front of me ended up spilling some coolant, so I had to shut it off in the burnout box, wait a few minutes, then they moved me over to the other lane. Did my burnout and must've rolled into the lights. All of a sudden it looked like I was deep-staged and the lights started coming down. So I went. The numbers on the ticket made no sense at all, showing a 4.x 60-ft and a 6.80x ET. ??? Never seen anything so screwed up.

Despite the slim car count, I only got two more time runs, 12.51 & 12.42 at 108. My gut feel was to dial 12.35 for the first round, but I chickened out and dialed 12.40. I ran Stock class. I was the first car in lane 5, and the first car in lane 6 was a newer Charger, also dialed in at 12.40, would've been a good heads-up race. But the cars got pulled differently, and I had to run a 2nd gen Camaro dialed in at 11.80. I ran this guy in time runs and he drilled me with .02 light, so I was concerned. I cut my best light of the night this round (.11) and beat his .13. I beat him to the stripe, barely. It was a double-breakout, I went 12.36 /12.40 dial, he went 11.72 / 11.80 dial. I was pumped I got the win.

2nd round, I dialed down to a 12.35 and was up against an early 80s Capri dialed in the mid-15s. I caught him by 3/4 track and lifted/coasted to the win. I had a .199 RT (yuck!!) , but miles ahead of his .61!

3rd round was the semi-final. 3 cars left, and of course I didn't get the bye. But if I win here, I'm at least getting a trophy. I was up against a supercharged newer Charger that was worked on by Hutters. I kept my 12.35 dial against his 12.50. Tree'd this guy too, .21 to .56, I passed him and lifted, and adding insult to injury, he broke out 12.47 / 12.50

4th/Final Round was against a very new VW Golf type R. Guy said he had a downpipe, a tune, and some other minor mod, and he was dialed in at 12.18!! He beat me on the tree, .17 vs my .23, and he had me covered. But for some reason, he thought he was gonna break-out and he lifted maybe somewhere between 1000' and the first cone of the speed trap. I drove around him for the win, pedaling once myself. I ran 12.43 @ 107 for the Win!!

My RT's were all garbage tonight, but they were enough for the win. I'll take it.

I'm 2 for 2 when racing Tony's car! I went 6 rounds with it back in 2014 on the last Wednesday of the season on his old engine.

I think I'm gonna get Dave a copy of the John Wayne movie The Undefeated......b/c that's what he is when driving my car.

Wonder if that's on DVD or VHS only these days?

Very fun night, to say the least.
