ASCC Rookie School & Test n Tune

Postby Basement Paul » Mon Mar 02, 2020 4:53 pm

Today I booked myself and the Firebird into this autocross event:

https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/as ... lub-693633

I like that I don't have to become an Akron Sports Car Club member to run it, and that it's limited to only 50 cars, so I'm thinking I'll get plenty of runs. Hopefully the weather is OK. Anybody else interested? I like that they run not in a parking lot which seems to open up the course some. I still don't like having to work the event too, but I guess that's the breaks.

Here's a video from a couple years ago showing one of the courses they set up. I think this is a newer Camaro, but not sure:

It's a nice start. This is why the TrackBird was built!

I got a generic answer that they're working to get everyone back on track asap. I'm guessing nothing will be happening that day. I'll update if I hear anything.

Looks like this was rescheduled for Sunday April 19th. I'm signed up, but to be honest, I still don't have high hopes for this actually happening that soon.

Sad, the rules what they are, I won't be able to be there,
BUT our GoPro will be ready.

I'm looking forward to reviewing the runs when I retrieve the card.

We can compare the TrackBird to 'Smokes ride.

Most importantly, have fun!

So, apparently they just cancelled this event again. I guess I wish they would make up their mind already. Oh well, now we wait again.

I'm supposed to go to FLA in early June when MostMint's track day is. If my trip gets cancelled, I'll be planning on going to Nelson.

Event suddenly rescheduled for Saturday 05/02/20, like tomorrow,
so BP was picking up the TrackBird Friday night to take on Saturday morning.
He takes the car, looking forward to a good time on Saturday.
Moment later the Bird is back. There was no time to panic,
a quick inspection reveals a broken tranny mount.
After several frantic phone calls, O'Reilly thinks they have something.
BP is gone like a flash and back with the new part and a plan.

New box, old mount

After enlarging some holes and making some spacers,
the day was saved. The TrackBird is ready to go!

Since I was the last one to drive it this was a serious relief!
Now I will be looking forward to our GoPro output.

It was a nice, but very windy day at Dragway 42 for the autocross. Dave and I were in different groups so we got to watch each other run. It was a cool course layout and ended up being basically a 2nd gear only scenario. I was definitely over revving it in a couple places but shifting to 3rd would have slowed me down. I started my day with a 71 second run I think, and by the end of the second session I was down to a 65.1. I was definitely satisfied with the car and the upgrades we did over the winter, until....

On the drive home Smoker and I got into a little acceleration contest. I got a big run on him and wound the Bird out to the point where I needed 5th gear. I noticed a small vibration in the driveline driving it to the track, and it may have been ever slightly worse going home. Well, at about 115, the rearend let loose with a bang and a wicked amount of noise and shake.
We were able to nurse it a mile off the freeway at about 10mph, but ended up getting Fade to haul it home.

Not sure what the problem is yet. But we'll figure it out in the next week or so.

Wow, what a blast it was today!! I was trying to think of the last time I autocrossed, and I cant remember if I ever did with the Cobalt.. otherwise the last car might have been my MR2 in the late 90s. More than a few runs in that car resulted in spinouts at the old Goodyear course. This was also my first attempt at something swervy in a V8/RWD car.

The Vette ran very well! But the brakes on it are just absolutely atrocious. I don't know what kinds of pads are on there now, but they will be swapped out immediately. Subject for another thread.

For an autocross course, it's basically like a mini road course, which suits me fine! Being a 2nd gear only, I just started two-footing the gas and brake and it was really easy to make the car rotate... sometimes a little too much, but it was easy enough to recover. After the first run or two, I started just trying to be smooth. I was in the 1st run group, and the timers weren't working for most of the session. My last run, I did see a 62.1 come up. I was pretty pleased with that. In the afternoon, I would improve to a 61.8. I was respectably close to Mark Heine's times in his C7 Z06. He ran a 60.x in the afternoon.

There was another C7 Z06 there with a real hot-shoe who ran a 55.x There was also the first C8 I've seen there. I think C7-hot-shoe guy took a lap in the C8 and turned a 58.x Then there was the dude with the ZX2 that ran a 59.x. yeah, Escort ZX2. And a super bad ass '69 El Truck (that was the license plate) with a LS/6sp and complete suspension package.

I'll definitely go back again!
