Re: 2005 9.2x Linear

I have owned quite a few AWD vehicles (Audi, BMW, Mercury, Land Rover, Subaru, and your Saab) and the two Subaru drivetrains were truly different than the others in feel. They feel very rear biased. The rear tires always let go first, but the fronts aren't that far behind. On snowy roads, you can pu...

Re: 2005 9.2x Linear

Yeah, that light gray is really light and there are already a few stains thanks to the previous owner's carelessness. All black would look nice - I always had mixed emotions about the way they implemented that two tone interior. I agree that seat covers suck and with the shape of those seats I think...

Re: Megasquirt conversion harness

"the PCM drives an output that move the speedo needle" Isn't that exactly what you want to happen? Get an older or non-turn-by-turn GPS from Garmin and you can configure a simple screen that gives current speed, average speeds (moving and total), total distance, and even max speed co...

Re: 2005 9.2x Linear

According to Edmunds and including my new vehicle as physical dimensions were part of my decision: Length Saab - 175.6 Xterra - 178.7 Corvette - 179.7 Width Saab - 66.7 Xterra - 72.6 Corvette - 73.6 These are all small vehicles by our standards, but they are big when considering narrow streets, craz...

Re: Weird car shopping

The painful shopping saga is over. After having a Nissan dealer call it quits in negotiations yesterday (as opposed to me walking out) a couple thousand away from where I wanted to be, I was getting discouraged (I have never seen a dealer ‘walk away’ before). I wasn’t sure what to do when I headed b...

Re: Weird car shopping

I like the idea of heavier duty tires as I always felt more secure when I was banging around in heavy duty trucks, but I have never blown a normal light duty tire while off-roading so I don't think I would change out what it comes with unless I decide to buy used and need tires anyway. The off road ...

Re: Weird car shopping

That Rover owner is going to be ordering lots of parts. Fun video, but there is a serious side. I've met a lot of people who are taking training in exactly that kind of driving. The pictures of the American armored vehicle in Mexico that got shot at yesterday looked like there might have been a litt...

Re: Weird car shopping

I should add that from a car perspective, I am disappointed to be going to Africa. Had we been assigned to Europe, I think the purchase would be quite a bit more exciting. I test drove a GTI and that was so much more fun than a stupid truck. Of course the disappointment is only from a car perspectiv...

Re: Weird car shopping

The Explorer Sport-Trac is a very long vehicle, relatively speaking. In our world of full size crew cab long beds, it seems like a compact vehicle, but in a world of parallel parking in the city or turning around on dead end double tracks in the bush, it is huge (almost 3 feet longer than Xterrra, 5...

Re: Weird car shopping

I will be limited on size and weight for shipping of parts so it all depends on what I need. Delivery times will be painfully long, a couple weeks minimum and that is after I diagnose the problem (I'd guess three weeks for a diagnosis with a 50% accuracy  ). I am sure we will be buying lots of ...

Re: Weird car shopping

Leasing is out as few financial institutions are willing to let you take a car out of state, let alone the country. I took a serious beating on a leased vehicle when I moved to Alaska because the leasing company was so restrictive. There appear to be two issues with buying local. Prices are outrageo...

Weird car shopping

I am moving to Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo for two years. Our current vehicle is inappropriate. I have received quite a bit of guidance. I shouldn’t bring anything that I am concerned about because driving is a little crazy in the city. The guidance further states that 4X4 is not necessary ...

Re: AK Rover's Van

Désolé, monsieur. Je vais corriger ce fil. I meant to provide an update, but I haven’t logged in for awhile. The van is gone. I sold it a couple weeks ago to the first person who called me, mere hours after posting on Craigslist (which means my price was way too low). The van worked out well. It fin...
