cub cadet help

Post by TireSmoker »

I need to upgrade my snowblower. Neighbor across the street has a tracked unit, looks like it works pretty well. I don't know much about Cub Cadet stuff, but I found this one and it has the bonus of being nearby. Opinions?

Cub Cadet is MTD and you can get parts all over for them. I own a Honda
track drive blower. The traction is always sweet, but I think track units tend
to be a bit slower than a tire machine would be. I'd tell you that you should
get a machine with tires unless you have a hill or some steep grade. I also
think you can do better price-wise than this guy is offering. A new blower
like this ( just guessing here without checking the internet ) I would guess
to be around $800 or so. This unit is 16 years old. If you can get it for
$275 - $300 it'd be more desirable in my opinion.

Johnny is correct. the track units are sweet but slower. I am partial to HONDA blowers. Although that was a long time ago. Off all the blowers I saw at the shop I liked Honda the best. What ride on mower do you have? A tractor mounted unit might be awesome too. Add some wheel weights. Then ride in style.

I agree on both that the track drives are a little slower, but the mound at the end of the driveway is NEVER an issue. I also think he's high on the price on this unit. If it needed all that stuff, it's been ridden pretty hard. Plus, it's going to need new skids too. I think if you hold out, you could find a similar MTD / Cub Cadet in better condition for less or similar money.

And in case there's any question, the new MTD snow blowers are made exactly the same as these except they have the MTD brand Chinese motors on them which is basically a completely stolen design from Tecumseh which is out of biz anyway.

Winter is almost over... ask him about it in April. $200 sounds a lot better.

Good luck,

Thanks for the tips. I don't have any serious inclines here -- quite the opposite. Is a tracked machine in top gear slower than a walking pace?

I have this big 20hp zero-turn mower, I *wish* I could mount a big snow blower attachment on the front of it... but that would take a Racin'Jacin level of fabrication that I don't possess. I've googled trying to see if there were any other ZT mower accessories for snow removal and found very little.

It would still be plenty fast. Normal walking pace for sure. They just don't change the drive ratios for the wheel drives and the tracks, and the wheeled ones have taller tires, so they go faster. Most of those are too fast in the higher gears anyway, so it's really no big deal IMO.

If I had a bigger driveway, I would get a track drive over a wheel drive any day.

Dave,

Fred32v and I are in the process of selling this on Craigslist........

http://cleveland.craigslist.org/grd/4857795463.html

It's a bit of a fix-r-upper, but I'd give it to you CHEAP!!!
The blower is about 3 feet wide. I also have a set of chains for it.
Call me if you are interested.

On the other hand, Honda blowers are THE BEST! I bought mine in
2001 ( 6hp, 24" wide track ) used from Hauter's ( BP was employed
there at the time and got me a sweet deal ) and I've used it as the
only machine to clear snow since. The only issue with them is that
used ones usually bring $800, even if they are ancient.

Thanks John, I'd love to have something like that, but that thing takes up a lot of floorspace. That's why I wanted something for my zero-turn mower.

The original ad I posted guy has lowered his price to 375.. I never called.

But I suppose this one looks like a better deal? Looks pretty new to me. http://cleveland.craigslist.org/grd/4860822285.html
