hopefully I will get the seats out of the car, remove the trash, vacuum and pressure wash it so I can realy see what I have to work with.

So I removed the race stuff today.
MOMO seats, 5 point harnesses, half the roll bar (although it will end up back in the car) and the air cooling/intake tubes w/ the cooler.

I also removed the rear window, the package tray cover, the door panels, the door weatherstripping, the headlights, the front turn signal assemblies, rear turn signal assemblies and the rear bumper cover.

I found a BUNCH of rust under the rear package tray from where the rear window leaked. BAD.

On the good side...........I found the original owners manual, warranty book from 1972 with 6 miles on the car.........old bill of sale.......title..........old registrations and some other misc paperwork. I'll be sorting through it later and putting it in a binder. I hope to be able to document the miles.

Next step is to finish removing the roll bar (although I have to remove the rear wheels to get to the bolts inside the rear fender). Remove the rear seats & interior panels. Then to vacuum it all (maybe wash too) so I can assess the true condition of the RUST. Since I have the paperwork I am considering keeping it. But I still haven't had time to get any expert opionions yet.

I also found a Motronic control unit under the driver seat. I searched the number on it and it appears to be for a 1987 Carrera 3.2, so that leads me to believe the guy I talked to telling me the car had a 3.2 in it is reliable. I will try to find the engine nymbers later this week too.

That's cool stuff to have, that can only help the value of the car. 32V and I were just talking about this car yesterday and were hoping you were making progress.

I replaced that piece in the '68 Beetle I restored with a flat piece of 10 gauge steel. If you don't have a MIG welder (or a good buddy with one :mrgreen:) you could put it in place with steel pop rivets and then get someone to weld it. Or, if its going to be a driver, just rivet it every inch and apply seam sealer. No one will ever know. That's how I did the floors in the Beetle. I figured if they build air planes with rivets it should be good for a car. Don't think I'd use panel adhesive there since its a fire wall.

Thanks Maverick. I think I have the parts sourced (Vertexauto) but agoing to wait until I get the rest of the stuff out and then cleaned. I like this car the more I look at it.

@ Paul, I had to finish up the Grey M3. Now just to get it sold. Once that hapens then I'll have more room to work on the Porsche. Unless I decide to trade my brother the M3 for doing all thebody work. : ) Not sure he'd go for that though.

So today after work I removed the last of the roll bar, the rear seats and the carpet/sound deadening.............Guess what.............This is what happens when you let the carpet get wet and then let the car sit for 10 years. You can OBVIOUSLY see EVERYWHERE there was sound deadening and carpet, just look for the rust line..............

ON THE GOOD SIDE. I think I have confirmed that the engine in the car is a 218 hp 3.2litre from a 1988 Carrera.

Even though it looks terrible under that window, it looks pretty clean in the engine area as far as rusty parts are concerned.

Any thoughts yet on a direction you might take with it or still waiting to sell the M3 before you make that call?

It seems to be about $1200 in repopped sheetmetal parts. I am waiting for some replies on a 911 website. If the engine was't questionale I would move forward with the entire car. I am still leaning that way. The only real rust seems to be that seat area and a SMALL in the front hood area.

Well I got an unsolicited offer on the Porsche. It's pretty high. A little higher and I would have taken it. I am actually still considering it.

A quick profit is a wonderful thing, especially if you have no labor involved
in the project. This looks like a huge project. I'd take the money and run,
unless you have a lot of time to spare.

Well I spoke to another guy who sent me a REAL nice offer on the 911. He should be wire transferring money on Tuesday and then scheduling a shipper after that. So it looks like the car is SOLD.
