removing a stuck brake rotor

Post by TireSmoker »

So the brakes on my 2000 Silverado were squealing a lot, and the the squealing changed to grinding. It was finally time to do the brakes, which I've already done once on this thing and they don't even have that many miles. I think I've only put 25k miles on it in the past 4 years. (77k total)

It was the passenger side that was grinding, so I started there. Caliper and caliper bracket came off nicely since I never-seized everything when I did the job last time. The rotor was another story. After trying to heat the hub area, and lots of two-hand over-head swings with a baby sledge, it wasn't budging *at all*. It was time for some Internet Fixin'.

I found this video on youtube:

Looked simple enough.

Those are probably 7/16 or 1/2" bolts, but I didn't have any, so I had to make do with some 3/8" bolts and some washers. Along with my trusty Makita impact gun, I managed to do this:

I don't think I'm gonna be able to have this one turned... :-)

I'm not sure what the deal is with rotors, but the last ones I removed
were on my kid's Saturn. They looked very similar to yours on the surface
and they came off the exact way.... Except mine gave in to being pounded
on by a 20# sledge. I opted to hit the contact surface from the side and
got lucky when the rotor cracked by a wheel stud, causing the rotor to
loosen up. I think the rotor materials are junk. I did anti-seize the crap
out of the hub and center of the rotor when the new parts were installed.
