It was called the Quantum Syncro. It was only in wagon form, and they only made about 3000 of them over a three or four year period. The front half is essentially a 4000/Coupe Quattro (Audi "small chassis") but the back half is unique. It has trailing arms similar to a BMW or Mercedes of t...

Oh, er. The Golf is for sale. The reasons for this are twofold: The rust is far worse than I expected. For less than how much it would cost to acquire and swap in a transmission that can handle any kind of power, I picked up this: http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k224/nnelsyncro/Quantum%20Syncro/P1...

To continue borking up a for-sale thread... Those cars had a switch on I think the backside of the passenger cylinder head. The idea was, it wouldn't allow the fan to work until the engine warmed up. They supposedly fail all the time. I say supposedly, because I never really got a chance to work on ...

Head is done, acquired some ARP rod bolts (factory is use once, throw away, just like the head bolts) and so I finally got around to popping a piston out to look at the rod bearings. Wow. This thing has some seriously *beefy* little rods. At a guess, they have all the metal of "Pink" rods ...

This is somewhat embarassing... :) I know not only the cars I've had but the amount I've driven them. 1995: 1972 Ford Thunderbird ($1200), 27,000 miles 1996: 1988 Subaru GL Wagon ($650), 27,000 miles 1996: 1985 Isuzu Impulse Turbo ($100, + many futile thousands), 18 miles 1997: 1985 Subaru RX Turbo ...

No pace notes, so they are just going by route instructions? Some teams are boycotting non-recce rallies over there. The trick to haul ass is to watch the treeline, you're not looking at the road so much as looking up at the trees. Well, some people get a kick out of cutting down trees in strategic ...

As it turns out a 2:1 ratio is going to be way too fast, but most people who have done it before are not talking.

Hmm.

In other news, the head studs came in. Nothing says "fast" like an engine block with studs sticking out of it.

It's a matter of max RPM. The M62 is only good to 14,000rpm continuous. After factoring in the V.E. of the blower, the V.E. of the engine, calculating the heat generated, I *think* a 2:1 pulley ratio on the 1.8 will give me about 10psi. Also a 7000rpm rev limit, with an "absolute" of 8000r...

After shipping the head off to WRE for a disassembly and cleaning, "Seat blend" turned into "let's remove the right angles from the port bowls" and "let's trim down the tree stumps that the intake guides are peeking out of". Porting sucks. Or at least, trying to smooth ...

I cannot wait until the first customers pony up to have us do an LSn/4L60E swap into their older car. It should be the best of both worlds, and pre-made wiring harnesses and bare-bones engine computers are available so it should be fairly simple. The 455/700R4 Olds is still here so no word on what i...

A rebuttal of the Ken Block thing: No practice, just a low speed reconnaisance so this is really the "first shot"... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjeaimPXxWE How good are you driving in reverse when you've got a 6 point harness and a HANS on? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RudUwL630k&am...
